VILLA BAGATELLE

Rating: 4.5 Rating

Don’t imagine a classic French bistro. It rather resembles the atmosphere of my favorite Nancy Meyers films. The building is beautiful. It’s as if, back in 1929, it had expected itself to become The Villa Bagatelle and to open its doors to those wishing to enjoy the heaven of brunch.

The welcome and the service are youthful and friendly. The French toast with sour cream and smoked cheese is truly divine, as is the avocado toast with turmeric egg. The waffles also fit into the idyllic picture with their light, jelly white chocolate cream, strawberries and a hint of mint. The portions are colorful and generous, yet we have decided to stay after the breakfast and to taste their lunch offer, as well.

The villa is so family-friendly that children have their own little fairytale world in the garden. On the way to the Brót Bakery, I was also impressed when I caught sight of the Csiga Bakery, like a miniature gingerbread house, and then I saw the birdseed cup, not to mention the two doves which were nesting on the tree…

The only thing sabotaging the otherwise endless harmony was the teriyaki salmon. The few bites of dry fish fillet were terribly salty. The calf’s liver with mushrooms (like a kind of reimagined Hungarian braised liver and onions) tried to make up for the bad experience, and was really delicious. I would happily return for breakfast any time, but I might skip the lunch. It’s not their main profile and obviously it is not what they are the strongest at.

Over time, ‘bagatelle purple’ has become a catchphrase and the villa remains a bruncher’s paradise.
